19th February ‘Conservation – controversial or conscientious?’ 

Thomas Marks, Editor of Apollo will curate a conversation between Alexandra Gent, Paintings Conservator at The Wallace Collection and Christophe de Quénetain, TEFAF Antiques exhibitor and historian. The topic for discussion is restoration and conservation. Last year, the Wallace Collection received a grant from the TEFAF Restoration Fund to conserve the lively and engaging portrait Miss Nelly O’Brien c.1762 by Joshua Reynolds PRA FRS FRSA (1723-1792). 

Coffee, tea and pastries will be served in the newly restored Great Gallery at 8.00 am  (GMT). This is first time the gallery has been used for such a purpose. The talk will start at 8.45 and finish at approximately 9.15 am. 

Following the talk, there will be a further opportunity to see the newly restored Great Gallery. Guests that wish to can stay to view Miss Nelly O’Brien and discuss the painting with Alexandra before the Wallace Collection opens to the public at 10.00am.

Symposium in honour of Dame Rosalind Savill

Guillaume Séret, Christophe Huchet de Quénetain, A two-day symposium to mark the retirement of Dame Rosalind Savill as Director of The Wallace Collection, Friday 13th & Saturday 14th April 2012, The Goodison Lecture Theatre, The Wallace Collection, Hertford House, Manchester Square, London : “Sèvres vases from Rothschild collections in French museums”.

The recent acquisition by the Sèvres museum of a pair of Sèvres “vases flacon à chaînons” with a dark blue ground and pastoral scenes after Boucher provides an appropriate opportunity not only for a comparison with the pair of “vases ferré” in the Musée Ile-de-France at Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, but also to retrace their shared provenance from Baron Alphonse de Rothschild (1827-1905).
